10% of Americans can't drive anymore

GM is introducing a brand new feature across its lineup that won’t allow its driver to start the car, truck, or SUV without buckling their seat belt. This was originally a feature that was part of the “Teen Driver Mode” on some of Chevy’s starter cars, such as the Colorado, Traverse, and Malibu, but has now moved into the more luxurious brands, with the “Buckle to Drive” feature coming standard on the 2021 Cadillac CT4 and CT5, the Chevy Corvette, and the Buick Envision.

As an extension of this feature, some of the future 2023 models will not be able to start if the front passenger seat is occupied and unbuckled. However, don’t think that there aren’t going to be ways around this. GM has said that the feature can be turned off in the Settings menu on the center console touchscreen. It can also be subverted by waiting until the message on the screen times out. Fortunately, this feature shouldn’t be too big of a deal for the approximately 90 percent of Americans who use their seatbelts.
