The Italian car company has a reputation for not letting anyone or anything “besmudge its reputation.” Some famous examples of this are their cease and desist order on Deadmau3 and its lawsuit against the charity “Purosangue,” which is the name Ferrari wants to use for their super SUV that will be coming out soon.
Now, though, they are back at it again, with another lawsuit against tuning company Mansory. Mansory has a tuning and body kit for Ferrari’s 488 GTB. Ferrari claims that they copied the design of their $2.6 million track-only hypercar, the FXX K.
To be honest, the front ends of the two cars look extraordinarily similar, and the wings on the rear are almost identical, but a lawsuit? That might be a bit excessive for something that cannot necessarily be proven definitively.
However, the court system disagrees with me, because Ferrari won the lawsuit. It isn’t known what the repercussions of this will be, whether that be royalties every time a kit sells, or forcing Mansory to scrap the project entirely, only one thing is for sure: this case will make aftermarket tuners think twice about their designs.
Mansory isn’t the only company to offer bodykits for “lesser” models from supercar companies to make them look like flagship models. A great example of this is DarwinPRO Aerodynamics’ bodykit for the McLaren 720S that is inspired by the looks of the McLaren Senna.
