Have you felt the need to take a step back and relax lately? During the pandemic, many have made the decision to “get away,” boosting the van life and AirBnb rental trends to new heights.
Anywhere you look, you’ll see someone posting about getting an RV and driving to some far away destination to destress and chill for a while.
However, if you want to take this trend to an extreme, there is one subcategory of off-grid travel that can get you away from civilization for months: overlanding.
There are a few viable options for overland travel: a home build, which is usually a truck or suv with some offroading capability, a fridge or cooler in the trunk, and maybe a rooftop tent.
Good options for these types of builds are the Toyota Tacoma, Jeep Wrangler or Gladiator, and the Chevy Suburban.
Next is a van build. These have some similarities to the van life trend taking over social media, but more focused on going off road long-term.
They will usually be 4x4 high top vans with beds inside and some solar power. Mercedes Sprinters and Ford Transits are a popular choice for this category.
Finally, the most extreme of the overlanders, a full-on heavy-duty truck. These, in most cases, take the form of professionally built rigs, usually built by companies like Earthroamer, Global Expedition RV, and Unicat.
These are incredible machines, having the capability to go months or even years off the grid without ever having to step foot in civilization.
However, there is a major drawback to these trucks: they are monstrously expensive, with prices going from $100,000 to easily over a million dollars. But worry no longer; there is an alternative.
On bring a trailer.com, a car auctioning website, there is a listing for a 2012 Titan XD 4400 Expedition Vehicle, an extreme overlander that can go pretty much anywhere you want to.
The truck features a 6.7L turbo diesel engine with four wheel drive and was originally produced for the U.S. Army.
This rig now has an Action Mobil camper in its bed, finished with luxuries like a fully-furnished kitchenette, a roomy dining area, a bathroom, and even a queen-size bed.
The goodies don’t stop there, with the living room featuring a power-adjustable table and hardwood flooring.
The shower, unlike some overlanders, is both full-sized and self-draining.
Professionally built with integrated climate control, a power-extending roof, a 480-watt solar panel system, and a 105-gallon freshwater tank, this a living space that can provide an escape from reality to anyone for weeks on end.
Riding on Goodyear MV/T tires, it’s up for auction right now, with a current bid of $131,000.
